As a child with pencils and manila paper, Ann Marshall Jr. began creating likenesses of pets and people and posting them on the walls of her room with nails and thumbtacks. It's a credit to the patience of her parents that Bailey's early artistic flair was never chastised!
Later, influenced by the refined, antique English and American paintings and portraits abundant in her Savannah childhood environment, she became a prolific art student, in high school at Savannah Country Day and continuing first at Emory University (B.A. degree), and, post-grad, at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Traveling with Emory in Europe, she studied closely the works of the masters with art scholars Dr. Tom Lyman and Dr. Clark Poling. Her living mentors in painting techniques were Mollie Michala of Atlanta, Justin West of the Ossabaw Foundation, and Joanne Eason at SCAD.
The artist then spent a decade in Southern California, where she sketched and painted the culture of Venice Beach and the Venice Canals outside Los Angeles. Her portfolio also includes photographs and portrait drawings done while traveling in Japan - her work is in private collections in Japan and the Philippines. With the birth of their first son, Bailey and her husband relocated to the Appalachian Mountains region of North Carolina and Tennessee, where she painted landscapes and children and exhibited in group shows, having a dual career in television as a news anchor. After the arrival of a second son the family moved to Atlanta.
Ann Marshall Bailey is currently at work on an originally conceived show of portraits called “New Legends of Atlanta,” which will feature the individual talents of this decade who came out of Atlanta area schools and went on to reach enormous heights in their respective fields, nationally. One of these paintings, of American Idol host, Ryan Seacrest, was purchased in advance of the show by the star’s parents. Another “Legends” painting, of tennis great Robby Ginepri, has already received a finalist award in a national juried show.
Bailey  paints classically realistic portraits in her studios in Roswell and Savannah, gives demonstrations, and paints and teaches plein air landscape art. She is a Juried Member of the prestigious Portrait Society of Atlanta, and has, for the past three years, been Managing Editor of the organization's noted FOLIO art magazine. Bailey’s pet portraiture is represented by the Peter Brandi Gallery in Roswell.
